Discover the risks

Fleas and ticks are a widespread and permanent source of risk for all pets. They are a direct and indirect cause of certain disorders in small animals.
Both fleas and ticks can infest pets and transmit serious diseases causing skin lesions, pain and infection. They can also transmit tapeworms to pets. If ticks feed on a pet’s blood they become engorged and they will multiply in the outside environment, not immediately on the pet. And if ticks are not eliminated they may spend between 3 and 10 days on your pet.

The biological life cycle of the flea

What you must keep in mind

Fleas

  • Completion of the flea cycle takes from 2–4 weeks in high seasonup to 6 months.
  • Eggs are laid on the host; a female flea lays an average of 27 eggs per day and about 1350 eggs in her lifetime (about 50 days).
  • An adult flea takes the first blood meal within minutes and mating occurs subsequently.

Ticks

  • The life cycle of ticks includes 4 stages: the embryonated egg and 3 active stages, namely the larva, the nymphal stage(s) and the adult ; all active stages require blood as a nutrient source.
  • Ticks spend 3–10 days on your pet.

Risk factors
